Amey pledge £100,000 to Oxford Cancer Centre

Amey an Oxford based public services company has pledged to raise over £100,000 in the next three to five years to support the Oxford Cancer Centre.

Amey’s £100,000 commitment has already funded the roof top garden at the new Centre and will help to buy a state of the art computer integrated theatre (CIT). CITs are crucial for the development of new keyhole surgery techniques which reduce recovery time and the risk of infection.

30 Amey Employees kicked off fundraising through raising £5000 by abseiling 100ft down the side of the women’s centre on the John Radcliffe site in June. Every pound raised was matched by Amey meaning a total of £10,000 has already been raised! Amey is in the process of entering a team of employees for ‘Not Just a Walk in the Park’ – a three mile sponsored walk around Oxford University Parks on the 18th October this year.

A team of Amey volunteers are also on hand to help with landscaping and weeding will ensure the garden continues to provide a space where patients, families and staff can relax for many years to come.

Elaine Harvey from Middleton Cheney a patient at the Centre has used the Amey roof top garden every day during her stay in hospital. She says “the garden is so pretty and peaceful it’s a real haven for patients, providing a non clinical area for you to chat to visitors.”

Mel Ewell, Chief Executive of Amey recently spent time visiting the garden and patients commented: “Amey is proud to be working with the local community and supporting Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust. The Amey garden is a great addition to the Cancer Centre and the provision of a new computer integrated theatre will help to improve patients and visitors experiences, ensuring they receive the best facilities on offer. With this pledge we hope to be able to substantially support the Cancer Centre in their fundraising quest and we look forward to developing a long and positive relationship with the Trust.”

The company has a commitment to corporate responsibility which goes beyond simply raising money. Director of Fundraising for the NHS Trust, Alice Hahn Gosling explained: “A team of Amey volunteers will regularly visit to keep the garden in good condition. This is what makes the Amey pledge so much more than just a donation. By building these long-term links and encouraging staff to volunteer we are ensuring that this will be an important space for patients to enjoy for many years to come. We are incredibly grateful for Amey’s enthusiasm and generosity.”
