Carbon neutral facility for military working dogs and their handlers

Amey公司与国防基础设施组织(DIO) needed to provide a new facility for the Defence Animal Training Regiment (DATR), to meet the future needs of the Canine Training Squadron (CTS), training the highly skilled military dogs and their handlers for a variety of roles ranging from operations in the UK to deployment overseas. We considered how to implement robust cost-saving and ecological solutions for this new facility, helping to achieve the Army’s commitment to meet net carbon zero emissions by 2050.

What did we do?

By November 2021, we will have delivered a carbon neutral state-of-the-art facility for CTS, the first of its kind in the MOD’s estate, by designing a facility that generates its own power and utilises a heat recovery system to maintain a normal office working temperature. It also harnesses and uses grey water for non-drinking requirements.

What impact did it have?

  • The installation of the greywater harvesting system reduces the use of mains water by up to 60%
  • The project is Defence Related Environmental Assessment Methodology (DREAM) excellent rating
  • The implementation of ‘GliderBIM’ will ensure that all parties have access to live data that will enable optimum, ongoing maintenance and warranty management to minimise future costs
  • The facility generates its own power using six rows of solar panels and an intelligently controlled air source heat pump keeps the building warm. The heat recovery system ensures that heat produced is drawn out via a ventilation duct and filtered to the offices and training facilities
  • The installation of a greywater harvesting system collects waste-water and feeds it through a filter before being reused to meet the various sanitary and non-drinking requirements of the Station.

The technologies and systems that have been deployed will be further extended to assist our customers in achieving their carbon targets. We have design expertise and a supply chain that can work together to deliver facilities that reduce the carbon footprint of new build facilities.
