Overview

Amey has submitted a comprehensive response to the Transport Select Committee’s call for evidence onthe future of transport data inquiry.

The Committee is looking into the potential uses of data to improve planning and delivery of transport services, management of transport assets, and helping transport users get around more quickly, efficiently and safely.

Our response

In a world where the discussion on the impact of transport projects is becoming increasingly polarised, we believe that having easier, faster, and cheaper access to data will result in improved timescales and quicker implementation of large transport infrastructure projects.

To design, operate and maintain the best possible infrastructure, we need accurate, instant, and actionable data on how people move. And to get that data, we must tap into the UK’s largest invisible and readily available sensor network - mobile network data. When combined with existing technologies, something genuinely transformative can be achieved, and we have emphasised the revolutionary potential of mobile network data in our submission the Committee.

We have also highlighted the perceived benefits to the freight sector and supply chain, through better access of freight movement data and the role that data can play in connecting crucial transport hubs.

Furthermore, we have made recommendations to Government on increasing the availability of active travel data and have proposed innovative solutions to enable the UK to scale towards an integrated and comprehensive landscape for transport data.
