As part of the MOD’s strategic goal to achieve net zero by 2050, the British Army needed to develop a sustainable car park to be used by Service personnel, civil servants, and the Army’s white fleet users. Together, we considered how implementing Ultra Low Emission Vehicles (ULEVs) and electric charging points could help provide a more sustainable solution compared to traditional fossil-fuelled vehicles.
What did we do?
In 2020, Project Taurus was launched to understand the potential of ULEVs and its impact on reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions whilst delivering significant cost reductions. The project saw the implementation of 10 double electric vehicle charging points, providing charge for up to 20 ULEVs, the first of its kind to be delivered to the MOD.
What impact will it have?
- The new car park will reduce energy demand and create significant cost saving across the Army estate
- As well as providing power for work vehicles (white fleet), the solar powered, battery stored carports will enable the move to ULEV.
Over the next 12 months, we will deliver similar solar carports and electric vehicle charging at six further bases across the Army Estate, supporting the Defence’s ambition to move to a more sustainable future and the Army’s target of net zero by 2050.
